On the banks of the Zambezi River, Tukongote Preschool has 3 colourful classrooms, an outdoor classroom, playground, kitchen, feeding shelter and, of course, ablutions.
Each classroom is full of educational displays, books and toys, with a learning area, playing area and reading corner/quiet area. The 6 preschool teachers, 2 per class, are encouraged to teach with a focus on play, participation and exploration.
As the village headman said in his speech at the ground breaking ceremony, just a few years ago the young children of his village could not speak any English, the national language of Zambia. They had nothing to do and nowhere to learn. Now 75 children receive 3 years of creative, holistic, fun and free pre-schooling in what is probably the brightest school in Zambia.
The children also receive a daily mid-morning meal.
